Atmospheric neutrons and boron capture: how far can the idea go?
In 2011, we asked an unusual question: could neutrons at aircraft altitude trigger captures in a boron-10-enriched tumour? The mechanism exists, but our calculation found a mean dose too low to treat a macroscopic tumour. The contribution is to quantify that limit before promising an application.

Where this fits in my research
Medical physics and solar forecasting share a method: start with the phenomenon, state geometry and assumptions, simulate, and check whether the order of magnitude meets the need. This question does not require AI. A model also helps recognize an insufficient approach and identify what remains to be demonstrated.
An atmospheric cascade, then a cellular-scale reaction
Galactic cosmic rays, mainly energetic protons and nuclei, generate secondary particles, including neutrons, in the atmosphere. Altitude, the geomagnetic field and particle spectra matter. Solar wind modulates incoming cosmic rays; it is distinct from solar energetic particle events. The galactic background is generally higher at solar minimum. This qualitative diagram is not a space-weather calculation.
The finding: a quantitative limit, not a validated flying hospital
The paper’s reference case uses 12 km altitude, 45° latitude, a neutron flux of 14.7 cm⁻²·s⁻¹, 10 cm of water, a 0.5 cm skull layer and an approximately 1 g tumour with 20 µg of boron-10 per gram. A hybrid model combines Monte Carlo transport with analytical approximations. The estimated mean tumour dose is of the order of 1 µGy for one hour, insufficient for macroscopic therapeutic irradiation.
At the reference concentration only, the tool illustrates D̄ ≈ 1 µGy × (t / 1 h). A separate panel shows I = 100% × (t / 1 h) × (c₁₀B / 20 µg·g⁻¹): a relative boron-interaction count index, normalized to 100% for one hour at 20 µg/g. It is neither a capture probability nor a total dose at a different concentration. Spectrum, geometry and mass stay fixed; the paper’s transport model is not rerun. Concentration refers to a numerical phantom, not an amount to administer to a person.
What the study contributes to modeling
The work connects three levels: reactions in boron carrier molecules, transport through a moderator and tissue, and dose orders of magnitude. Its second contribution replaces some expensive transport steps with analytical expressions for transmission and mean free path. The paper reports 42 seconds instead of 15 hours for 6,000 neutrons, under its historical computing conditions. This is not a benchmark of this browser: it is a concrete example of physical simplification serving a scientific question.
Monte Carlo: following many neutron histories
A microscopic cross section σ(E) has units of area and characterizes interactions of a neutron of energy E with a nucleus. The material’s macroscopic cross section Σ = Σᵢ Nᵢσᵢ has units of inverse length, where Nᵢ is species i number density; it sets the mean free path 1/Σ. In a homogeneous medium, a uniform draw U between 0 and 1 gives a sampled distance ℓ = −ln(U)/Σ. The code then samples the nucleus and reaction channel from cross sections and follows the energy and direction after collision. Many histories are accumulated to estimate energy deposition.
Under the usual independent-history, finite-variance assumptions, standard error decreases as 1/√N. More histories do not correct inappropriate geometry or physical data. Our 2011 study combines these draws with analytical expressions; the browser diagram illustrates the mechanism without rerunning the transport.
Los Alamos, ENDF/B and the paper’s code
The paper used ENDF/B data, citing access through Los Alamos’ historical t2.lanl.gov website. These evaluations supply cross sections and reaction distributions. ENDF/B is produced by CSEWG and distributed by Brookhaven’s NNDC, rather than belonging exclusively to Los Alamos. Our code was written in Visual Basic. The paper mentions MCNP as an example of a transport code using these evaluations; this is not a claim that our simulation ran MCNP or involved an institutional partnership with Los Alamos.
Why does (n,p) appear as approximately zero?
This is the rounded result of the conditional BSH/BPA neutron–molecule comparison in the studied spectrum (Table 2), not a physical prohibition. The paper’s method includes (n,n), (n,γ), (n,p) and (n,α). In tissue, ¹⁴N(n,p)¹⁴C also contributes to BNCT dose, separately from boron capture; see IAEA, Advances in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy, Table 7. This panel does not calculate those dose components. Numerical labels state the thicknesses; the drawn skull width is exaggerated for visibility.
BSH versus BPA: what the comparison actually means
BNCT means Boron Neutron Capture Therapy. BSH and BPA are boron carriers. Table 2 compares neutron–molecule reaction distributions in the studied spectrum: the (n,α) channel accounts for 94% with BSH and 88% with BPA. These conditional distributions are neither capture probabilities for each flight neutron, tumour selectivity nor clinical success rates. At equal boron-10 concentration, the tool therefore applies no carrier-dependent dose multiplier.
Very local does not mean everywhere
Capture produces ⁷Li and an alpha particle: ¹⁰B + n → ⁷Li + α. Their tracks are a few micrometres long (approximately 4 µm for lithium and 8 µm for alpha in the paper). The paper also reports about 0.5 Gy per impact locally at cellular scale. That conditional value does not mean that every cell receives this dose. This tool does not reproduce the microdosimetry: scoring volume and deposited-energy fraction would need clarification before recalculating it.
Flight exposure is a different quantity
For a simplified 56.5 kg cylinder, the paper obtains 4.37 µSv/h versus a historical SIEVERT Paris–New York reference of 6.1 µSv/h, approximately 28% lower, with different solar periods and several approximations. This order-of-magnitude comparison is not a current flight calculator. Gray (Gy) measures absorbed energy per unit mass; sievert (Sv) weights radiological exposure. The two panels cannot be directly converted into each other.
What would need to come next?
The paper considers micrometastases and an adjuvant hypothesis while calling for biological experiments. Boron distribution, selectivity, low-dose responses, microdosimetry and benefit versus risk would have to be established. Turning aircraft into radiotherapy rooms is an exploratory closing perspective, not demonstrated efficacy. This teaching experience is neither a prescription nor a clinical planning tool.
